Vocational and Technical (VoTech) Department

The Vocational and Technical (VoTech) Department at Presbyterian College of Education is committed to providing holistic, skill-based education that aligns with the national goals for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The department focuses on developing practical competencies, problem-solving abilities, and entrepreneurial mindsets among teacher trainees to prepare them for effective delivery in Ghanaian basic schools.

The department is structured into two main areas: Vocational Skills and Technical Skills, each with distinct focus areas that blend theory and practice.

Vocational Skills

The Vocational Skills arm of the department centers on hands-on training in Clothing and Textiles and Food and Nutrition—two essential areas that promote creativity, self-reliance, and practical life skills.

Clothing and Textiles

This unit trains students in the principles and techniques of:

  • Garment construction and tailoring
  • Pattern drafting and clothing design
  • Fabric types and textile science

Clothing maintenance and fashion entrepreneurship

Through intensive practical sessions, students gain the skills to create, alter, and design garments while being introduced to small-scale fashion business practices.

Food and Nutrition

This branch equips trainees with culinary skills and nutritional knowledge, including:

  • Meal planning and food preparation
  • Principles of nutrition and healthy eating
  • Food safety, hygiene, and preservation
  • Local and international cookery techniques

Trainees actively participate in cooking labs and food demonstrations, helping them develop the confidence and competence to teach nutrition and culinary skills effectively.

Technical Skills

The Technical Skills section emphasizes theoretical knowledge alongside introductory practical experience in selected technical trades. This area prepares students with foundational understanding and appreciation for technical work that is essential in modern education and community development.

Key focus areas include:

  • Electrical installation basics
  • Blockwork and masonry principles
  • Carpentry and joinery techniques

While the emphasis is on theoretical concepts, students also engage in limited practical sessions to gain hands-on exposure and better understand the real-world applications of these skills.

Together, the Vocational and Technical Skills programs aim to produce competent, confident, and creative teachers who can integrate practical life skills into their teaching, promote entrepreneurship, and contribute to the broader goal of national development through TVET education.
